Tekoa has a rich heritage and history, having played a key role in the development and support of neighboring communities and farms for over 100 years. Tucked away in an incredibly scenic portion of Whitman county, Tekoa is situated at the base of Tekoa Mountain (elevation 2,490 feet), on the extreme eastern end of the rolling hills known as the Palouse, and to the west of the mighty Benewah Range of Idaho. With a population of over 800, Tekoa retains it's small town size and charm. Surrounded by mountains and farms of cattle, wheat, barley, bluegrass and lentils, it was once the busy hub of the area's railroads. Having an annual precipitation of about 20 inches and an average snowfall of 30 inches, it enjoys a definite four season climate. Just 39 miles south of the Spokane Valley, 48 miles north of Pullman, and about 55 miles from the Spokane International Airport, it's only a short drive away from major metropolitan areas. Crosby (Main) Street is not what it used to be. A 5-year observation sees City Hall outgrowing its’ surroundings and taking up housing in the old Case building. The building was remodeled and now holds City Hall, the Council Chambers and Mayor's office.
~The Old City Hall now houses two business, Chase Photography Studio and Dance
Theatre Northwest.
~The Library has been renovated and has a special spot for the Children's Story Hour.
~The Museum is located in the back of the library.
~We are lucky to have three great restaurants in Tekoa. The Feeding Station, Cafe Artisan
and C & D's Bar and Grill.
~Eclairs just opened recently and has the best coffee around.
~Tekoa has a Liquor Store and a Real Estate Office.
~The Pharmacy gives the community a much needed resource for emergency medicines and
supplies, and warm and friendly service.
~Balloon Biz continues to grace north Crosby Street across from the Kate's Cut & Curl
and Tanning Salon.
~Tekoa Variety is a great place to get just about anything.
~The Tekoa Market provides all our grocery needs.
~The Hardware Store provides us with all our hardware needs and lumber supplies.
~Our Lawyers and Accountants remain across from the Post Office.
~The restoration of the Empire Theater continues to thrive, but for the grace of those good souls
who pledge their time, money and efforts toward the success of giving us quality entertainment
and enjoyment.
~The Tekoa Medical Clinic continues to serve our community with health care under the direction
of Pete Martin. It does not go unnoticed that the facility is always kept in good repair and is
an asset to our city.
~The Economic Development Committee is devloping some innovative proposals for expansion
of the City's business and manufacturing zones.
~There is a new Ambulance Barn and new storage units.
~Out on the Highway is one of our biggest employers, the Tekoa Care Center. Also on Highway
27 is Tekoa Country Kids Day Care and Early Learning Center along with the used book
store. Being an agriculture area, Columbia Tractor, Wilbur Ellis, and Gardner Oil supply us
with our equipment, fertilizer and chemical and fuel needs .
