Thanks to all the kids and parents who participated. A very special thank you goes to Theresa Raines for putting together all of the craft projects we completed each week for summer reading.
Our Teen/Adult summer reading program continues through August 15. Drawings will be held on August 16. Prizes include 2 Silverwood passes, a haircut from Kate’s Hair & Tanning Salon, along with a free coffee certificate from Éclair’s or a beverage from C & D’s Bar & Grill.
The library will be closed the first week of August for maintenance week.

I hope you were able to join in the excitement of this year’s Slippery Gulch celebration. Even though the weather didn’t cooperate completely, the weekend was a huge success. One event was a particular success this year. The fishing derby had 107 entries. This made for busy days at the Tekoa Hardware store. Big thanks to Julie Cook and her employees who allow the fishing derby to use the store as their headquarters. Huge thanks to Mackenzie Lawson and Diane Latkowski for organizing the event. Mackenzie and Diane had their work cut out for them this year. There were many hours invested in fish measuring and fish photography. I drove by the hardware store many times during derby week and saw the lines of excited kids waiting to register their fish. They were able to purchase wonderful prizes for the participants due to the generosity of many in our community that realize the importance of family fishing time. The following people and businesses helped sponsor the fishing derby and donated almost $850.00 for prizes:
American West Bank Balloon Biz C & D’s Bar & Grill Co-Ag Columbia Tractor Crosset’s Food Market EC Hay & Son Éclair’s Faunce Ag Aviation Feeding Station Gabbard Electric Dave Gumm Hansen Farms Kate’s Cuts and Curls Kramer Funeral Home McGregor’s Nick Lawson Farms Nita Marie’s Salon Seeds Inc/Plants of the Wild Ted Rasmussen PS Tekoa Care Center Tekoa Community Ambulance Tekoa Hardware Tekoa Market Tekoa Medical Clinic Tekoa Pharmacy Tekoa Post Office Wilbur Ellis PLEASE GIVE THEM THANKS!
~Messages from the Mayor~
It’s hard to believe it’s already August! When you look at our wheat fields, it seems like it should be late June or early July. Some college students will be hard pressed to even begin working harvest this year.
I want to share with you an article in the Spokesman-Review dated July 19. The article concerned sewer rates in Spokane. Their rates for 2012 will be $49.64 a month with a projection in 2017 of $73.46 a month!! The rate increase is a result of needed improvements in their sewage treatment plant so raw sewage is not dumped into the Spokane River. How does that affect Tekoa? We are in the same “boat,” and it will be interesting to see how their city council tackles this problem when many of their council members view these rate increases as “unrealistic,” especially during our current economic downturn. Our plans are to replace sewer lines that have deteriorated, allowing ground water into the lines, thus overloading our treatment plant during heavy rains. If this can be accomplished, I hope the State Department of Ecology will continue issuing us a permit to discharge treated waste water into Hangman Creek that eventually flows into the Spokane River.
It appears that with summer comes a continuous problem with dogs!! If only all our dog owners would keep their pets on a leash or enclosed in a fence. If they would be sensitive to continuous barking, most problems would disappear. I believe dog owners may leave for the weekend (camping at some peaceful location) leaving their dog home barking all night at whatever!! The council is seriously considering a limit to the number of dogs allowed for each household, the number being discussed is in the 3-to-4 category.
Dave Tysz has set Tuesdays and Saturdays from noon to 4 as a time for people to bring cardboard or other loose paper (newspapers) to our recycling site next to the Feeding Station. Plans are now to get some bins/boxes to begin collecting plastics, glass, cans, etc.
Yard Sale Day is this Saturday, August 6. If you want to have a yard sale and be on the city map, sign up at the Tekoa Market. The cost is $5.00! I hope everyone who has a yard sale is willing to pay this $5.00 fee that is used for advertising the event. It’s never too late to get your name on the list.
You will see plenty of action this month as work begins on our reservoir, water lines on the north and west side of town, and a new sidewalk leading to the bridge and up the hill to the Tekoa Mountain Chapel.
You will notice that Kathy Hutton has begun a monthly tribute to the many volunteers that make important contributions to our community. I hope to see your name mentioned!!
And finally, please go up to the Goldenrod Cemetery and look at the Veterans Memorial display. It is very impressive. The cemetery committee needs to be added to Kathy Hutton’s growing list of volunteers that need to be recognized.
Enough for this month; enjoy your summer!
