~Messages from the Mayor~
We begin a new year!! I listened to President Obama’s spending freeze in his State of the Union speech; Governor Gregoire‘s message is to cut programs and our county commissioners are trying to find ways to cut county expenses. We have “been there—done that,” and I am pleased to write that the financial state of our community is on solid ground!! You can thank the city council and our business manager for a budget that fits our needs. The “excess” has been eliminated!! The council applied for a Community Development Block Grant to address two crucial concerns. First, we applied for a $360,000 grant to construct a perimeter wall around the water reservoir and a new roof. We also applied for a $221,000 grant to re-drill the well (referred to as well #2) across from the city hall building. Both are grants, which mean we can save our reserve for projects that require loans and grant monies. Grants are monies given to the city that do not have to be repaid. According to Duane Groom, if we can get well #2 in operation, it will lessen the demand for the Truax well, which is the well that produces both an undesired taste and smell! The council voted Mike Bogenreif as our Mayor Pro-temp and council person, Eileen Soldwedel is looking into bus service to the casino and possibly to Spokane.
