~Messages from the Mayor~

Well, I guess summer has finally arrived and we sure don’t need any more rain!!

Our Slippery Gulch Celebration Day appeared to be a huge success. There are many
individuals who need to be recognized, and I’ll try in my future newsletters. However, a few people need to be recognized now, and they are Melinda Wilkins, Bob and Linda Zehm, and Sandy Dehan. Then I should thank Angie Rambo because of the fantastic fireworks display, and I could go on and on!! Next month I’ll do a better job and have some interesting financial information to share. By the way, anyone who bought a duck for the duck race or a raffle ticket helped sponsor the activities and necessities that make up the celebration!

On to our dog dilemma!  The council passed an ordinance prohibiting bringing any
new pit bull dogs into Tekoa. Those people who currently own pit bull dogs will be grandfathered in, if they secure a license before July 31, 2010.  Failure to do this
before that date will be in violation of our ordinance, and they will be required to
remove the pit bull dog from the city immediately. Those with pit bull dogs, that are licensed, must follow many stringent requirements to keep them. I can’t describe all of them, but a few include the following:

1)  Must be in a kennel or pen.
2)  If it goes outside its kennel, it must be on a leash no longer than 4 feet and in
control of an individual over 18 years of age. It must also be muzzled if if outside
     its kennel.
3) The kennel must have a floor that is attached to the sides of the pen, and the sides
must be embedded in the ground no less than 2 feet.

There are more requirements that you can read about in the pit bull dog ordinance. We
will leave copies of this ordinance both at City Hall and at the post office!! (A comment from the Clerk/Treasurer – this new ordinance has many requirements for anyone owning a pit bull, including a $250.00 fine for any pit bull dog in the city that is not licensed. If you currently own a pit bull dog, be sure to get your dog licensed, read the ordinance and follow it, in order to keep from paying the fine.)

We hired Mike Bogenreif to be our code enforcement officer. So, if any of you become
concerned about dogs, junk cars and yards, burning at night, loud noises-- especially at night, you can call either City Hall during business hours at 284-3861, or Mike’s home phone at 284-2099. Mike will have information in each newsletter relative to City Ordinances, areas of emphasis and progress toward resolving some enforcement issues.
