Volunteer in Focus
By: Kathy Hutton

Tekoa is a wonderful community and I think many of us take it for granted.  One thing that
makes our town great is the people who volunteer to keep it beautiful, run the organizations,
help the less fortunate, etc.   I will be writing monthly articles for the City Newsletter to
showcase these volunteers.  Following is the first of my articles:

I hope everyone got a chance to see our wonderful community float and the beautiful young
ladies who represented Tekoa at the Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade in
Spokane.  If not, maybe you got the opportunity to see them at the Slippery Gulch Parade.
There are very few small towns that have been able to keep the tradition of a community float
alive.  In fact, to march in the Lilac Parade a band must accompany a float. Tekoa, Oakesdale,
Waitsburg, Washtucna and Kahlotus band members have combined to become a mass band
and accompany the Tekoa float through the parade. Tekoa has the good fortune to have a
very talented, hard working, creative, Royalty and Float Committee.  These people put in
countless hours to organize the Miss Tekoa pageant and create an original parade float each
year.  Representing the community as Miss Tekoa or one of the princesses is a wonderful
experience that gives these young ladies great opportunities.  Tekoa is fortunate to have a
program that represents our community in such a positive manner. The members of the
Royalty and Float Committee are Jim and Marianne Gordon, Rob and Melinda Wilkins, Bob
and Linda Zehm, Hillary Lawson, Robin Harp and Karen Blomgren.
PLEASE GIVE THEM THANKS.

* Messages from the Mayor *

Slippery Gulch Days is over, and one can truthfully state that the weather didn’t rain on our
parade!! But it was close!

I want to thank many people who made our Celebration Day such a success. Five ladies
immediately come to mind; Melinda Wilkins, Linda Zehm, Becky St. John, Joyce Hansen and
Sandy Dehan. There are others, and I will try each month to identify with the event and those
responsible for planning and running the particular event.

As I have mentioned before, if you purchased a shirt, a duck or a raffle ticket, you too
contributed, because these three fund raisers helped finance much of the celebration.

You have noticed the two large bins just below the Feeding Station. One of those bins is for
corrugated cardboard; the other is for mixed paper. Mixed paper includes phone books,
magazines, junk mail and packaging or any kind of paper other than corrugated cardboard.
It’s been said that 33% of your garbage can be classified as mixed paper. Dave Tysz is
coordinating our recycling effort, and he will be working with volunteers to help with this
project.

We are sending out letters to property owners who are not adequately maintaining their
property in Tekoa, indicating that they are in violation of a city ordinance if they allow weeds
etc, to grow unattended on their property. You may get copies of this ordinance at City Hall.

Lastly, I want to thank the volunteers and city employees, Duane and Rob, who worked
diligently prior to our Celebration Day in order to have our community center ready for the
day’s festivities. We are not finished with the cleaning and remodeling, but what is left will be
accomplished by, again, city employees and volunteers!! I have to add that Tara and Kynda
were not satisfied that the painting was “visitor friendly,” so they came to work with their
painting attire, and their final touch did make a big difference. You would have to see the
“before/after” to truly appreciate it!!
