                      ~TEKOA EMPIRE THEATRE NEWS~

Valerie Wolf Hughes (vocalist), and Junie Tonkin (pianist),
will perform “CELEBRATION,” music of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s
honoring our Lives, our Loves, our Land, and our Liberty, at the
Tekoa Empire Theatre on Saturday, June 20th for this year’s
Slippery Gulch afternoon show. Valerie and Junie performed in
Seattle together for a number of years, in addition to working
separately with several groups, and as soloists. Delighted with
the audience response to their World War II tunes at the
Theatre last year, Val and Junie are thrilled to return with a
new program chock-full of great tunes to tug at your heart,
keep your toes tappin’, and remind you that we do indeed live
in a great country!  Show starts at nearly 1 pm (after the

~Messages from the Mayor~

~~ I have quite a few items to report so excuse the length
of my many messages! First, people living on gravel roads
and eat dust all summer will get their roads oiled! It’s a
spendy project (est. $9,000) but those living on gravel roads
deserve a little of the street levy funds. Next summer we
plan to again chip-seal some roads and also prepare a couple
blocks of gravel roads to be chip-sealed. Only paved roads
can undergo this process.

~~ We plan to allow a “pigeon catcher” to come to town to
do his thing! The man works at night to catch pigeons that
seem to multiply each year. I’ll report on how many he
caught in the next newsletter.

~~ As you know, I try to promote part of our Slippery Gulch
Celebration in each newsletter. The Celebration Committee
is planning the first ever Tekoa American “Idol” Contest. The
contest will be in the Theatre beginning at 4:00 p.m. and
there are cash prizes for the 3 winners. If you know someone
who can sing, let them know about the contest. There are
applications at the Post Office. Also, there will be a feed at
6 p.m. and a dessert auction at 7 p.m. on June 6 at the Jaycee
Club to help fund our fireworks display.

~~ Thanks to Bob Zehm and Mark Gaines for putting up our
summer banners!!

~~ We had quite a discussion at our last Council Meeting
concerning billing all owners for homes/buildings the $20.00
sur-charge for water and sewer. This would include vacant
buildings, homes with no current habitants; basically any
structure that has a water/sewer hook-up. Next year that
surcharge would increase to $30.00. We are still deliberating
the suggestion of including lots that are developed with
sewer/water hook-ups. The next council meeting is June 1st!!

~~ There will be no major projects this summer in Tekoa. As
part of the City’s plan to replace the water/sewer lines and
reservoir, and treatment plant, we need to have a cultural
resource survey completed. That survey will be done this
summer. The city crew (Duane and Rob) plan to install water
meters and fire hydrants this summer after needed repairs on
our city streets.

~~ We can all appreciate the efforts of Cheri Currier with some
help from husband Jay and Monte Morgan as she has transformed
our city rock into a very attractive entrance into town. Thanks
Cheri and those that contributed funds to buy the trees and
other materials.

~~ One reason the billings are going out early this month is so I
can let patrons know that if they are interested in filing for one
of the council positions and/or the Mayors positions, you must do
so before June 6. There is a $10.00 filing fee that is sent by mail
or delivered to the Whitman County Auditor. If you have concerns
with the direction our city is going, here is your chance to become
actively involved. I believe all council members up for election
plan to file as well as myself. However, wouldn’t it be interesting
to actually have a contest for the Mayor’s position in Tekoa!!
