Goldenrod Cemetery News:
Some changes and new projects are happening at
the cemetery! The Memorial Rose Garden has been taken out, but a newly renovated one will take its place. The existing road that is in the north section of the cemetery is in the wrong place, so there will be a new road put in where it was originally platted to be. Also, they are working on a new Veterans Memorial. Plans will be complete at the end of May, and hoping to have it completed before the snow hits. A dedication is planned for Memorial Day 2011. Your patience is greatly appreciated while these projects are completed!

~Messages from the Mayor~

The city council heard some outstanding news at our regular monthly meeting.  It was
announced that the City of Tekoa will receive a grant worth $993,000.00 from the
State Dept. of Commerce. The grant, referred to as a CDBG (Community Development
Block Grant) will address two water concerns in Tekoa.
First, we will replace the roof covering our reservoir and also place a new layer of concrete
around the reservoir. This new layer will support the new roof.
Secondly, we will drill a new well by the one that collapsed some time ago. Since then,
we have had to rely on our other two wells, one of which gives off an unpleasant odor.
The grant also includes running a new water line from the reservoir to an existing,
new line located in the vicinity of the Catholic Church. This particular phase of the
project had been identified as one that our city crew was planning to undertake
this summer.
At one time, we figured that a new reservoir was going to cost the city close to 2 million
dollars, assuming that a grant would cover the other 2 million! Can you imagine what our
water rates would climb to in order to pay off a 2 million dollar loan?
And now let’s address a less exciting topic………our dog problem!! Many of you know
that one of our patrons was attacked by a pit bull a couple of weeks ago. The attack
required several trips to Spokane to have the bites treated, and can you imagine the
anguish associated with this type of attack? The owner was fined $500.00, since the
dog was not confined nor secured by a leash! The dog was impounded to the city shop
for a period of time to make sure the dog wasn’t rabid. The impoundment fee is another
$10.00 a day!
So, this unfortunate incident should be a wake-up call to all dog owners in Tekoa.
Here is a quick review of our city’s dog ordinance:

     1) Dogs must be secured by a leash or be confined within your residence and/or property.
     2) Dogs may not continually bark, howl etc. in such a manner as to disturb or annoy neighbors.
     3) Dog license is required. If your dog is caught running loose and is impounded,
the cost of the license is $50.00!! Normally the cost of the annual license is $10.00
for an altered dog, $20.00 for a dog that is not altered.

There is more to our ordinance that dog owners need to be aware of so we have
copies of the ordinance at City Hall and at the Post Office!
One last comment: people in Tekoa should be able to take a walk or even a run
without someone’s dog chasing them or acting in a menacing fashion that would
give someone the feeling that an attack is apparent. I also have a concern with large
dogs on a leash with a youngster rather than an adult. In this case, the dog’s owner
is liable for any damage caused even though the dog was on a leash.
The city is advertising for a Code Enforcement Officer, whose job would be to enforce
city ordinances. This part-time position would focus on a variety of ordinances and,
at this time, our dog control ordinance in particular!
I hear that the annual dessert auction will be held June 4, at the Jaycee Club beginning
at 6:30. Proceeds from this auction go to financing our fireworks display at the
Slippery Gulch Day. Hope to see you there!
