~Messages from the Mayor~
I have much to write about this month, so I’m getting right to it. First of all, the city council has reclaimed the Jaycee Club building, which is now called the Tekoa Community Center. The center needs some repair work before it can be used by the public. This work includes a new roof, flooring and lighting. It also requires a general cleaning. All this work hopefully will be completed before our Slippery Gulch Celebration Day.
Well #1should be running by the end of July. A pump has yet to be installed, and wiring and pipe work is needed to complete the project. As you know, all the expenses to complete this project are covered with a grant. For your information, our daily consumption of water is between 150 and 175 gallons per minute. The new well can pump 250 gallons per minute. The well next to the new well can pump 100 gallons per minute, and the south well on Truax is capable of providing 600 gallons per minute!!
Our next project will be replacing water lines on the north part of town as well as the west side across from Hangman Creek. Also, a new cover and reinforcement for our reservoir are planned for this summer.
Dave Tysz is in charge of our town’s recycling effort. Plans were to house dumpsters in the old city shop. We find however, that the dumpsters are too large to fit in the shop, so they will be located on the concrete slab in front of the shop. We plan to paint them if necessary, so they will look okay. To begin with, we will have two dumpsters, one for cardboard and one for loose paper. Now we need volunteers to help monitor the dumpsters when they are open. Those interested in volunteering need to call City Hall at 284-3861, and your name and phone number will be passed on to Dave. He plans to open the dumpsters himself on Saturday afternoons.
Congratulations to our float committee for placing 3rd at the Lilac Festival Parade. Because we have a float, our band is allowed to march; no float=no band!! Consequently, our float provides an opportunity for band members from Tekoa, Oakesdale, Waitsburg, Washtucna, and Kahlotus. They are called the Southeast Washington Marching Band.
As I mentioned in my last newsletter, the Council is preparing an ordinance that effectively deals with vacant lots, homes owned by absentee owners that are un-kept, and homes that are occupied but lawns and areas around the home are not maintained. We expect to pass the ordinance at our next Council Meeting on June 20.. Your input is always welcome!!
Last, but not least, is my last chance to publicize our Slippery Gulch Celebration Day. There will be an American Idol contest – one at 4:00 for young adults, and one at 6:00 for adults. New this year will be a contest called “Do you know more than another graduating class?” Competing will be members of the classes from 1961, 1971, 1981 and the class of 1991. Questions will deal with local trivia and -------------no more hints because we don’t want the contestants studying for the contest!!
Also, the Grand Marshalls of the parade will be members of the shows that made Tekoa famous. Included is this group were those referred to as ‘Earls Girls’! (Rawlings) Enough already; have a great summer!!
