*** NOTICES ***
PLEASE NOTE GARBAGE INFORMATION!! If you have garbage overages on your city bill, it is because you have extra garbage or extra weight in your can. This could be a bag, box, extra can, bundle, etc. The weight limit for a 32 gallon can cannot exceed 65 pounds; a 90 gallon Empire Disposal cart cannot exceed 125 pounds; if they do you will be charged an overage. All cans must have a lid, and they must be closed all the way. If lids are sticking up more than a couple of inches you will be charged an overage. This will also prevent water or snow from getting into the can and increasing the weight. If you put extra garbage on top of your can, you will be charged an overage as well. If you have any questions concerning this, please call City Hall during office hours.

~Tekoa Empire Theatre News~ ~March 6, at 7:00 pm Jim Basnight’s Rock and Roll band will be at the Empire Theatre. Born in Seattle, Jim Basnight’s Band has members with extensive and unique musical backgrounds. The band, fronted by Jim Basnight on vocals and guitars, performs from all six of Jim’s unique CD’s as well as his new career retrospective “We Rocked and Rolled: The First 25 Years of Jim Basnight.” They are all well versed in a number of styles including Rock from the 50’s through the 90’s, as well as Soul, Punk, Funk, Americana, Alternative and the Blues.
~Garfield-Palouse Middle School Players will be presenting “The Royal Bachelor” on Thursday, March 25 at 7:00 pm. Tickets for this show will be sold at the door. The play written by Martin Follose and with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur, takes place in the present day palace of a foreign kingdom. When an unhappy ruling queen dies, the throne is passed by accident to a local hillbilly who happens to be present, rather than to the scheming prince. The yokel’s search for a wife takes the form of a televised singing competition in “American Idol” format, amid the antics of the competing hopefuls, and of the new king’s loyal – and not so loyal – scheming staff.
~Messages from the Mayor~
Our February meeting was somewhat uneventful. However, I will recap the main item of importance and then write a little about our annual Slippery Gulch Celebration. The council did adopt goals for 2010, and they are listed below. We always are open to suggestions for goals that have not been formally adopted. Just call city hall at 284-3861. One item that has been a joint venture for both the city and the chamber of commerce is the construction of new welcome signs entering Tekoa. Dan Hutton’s high school shop classes will begin constructing two new signs that will look a little like those you might have seen entering Airway Heights, just west of Spokane. Eileen Soldwedel continues to work on providing Tekoa with bus service to the casino in Worley. Councilman Roy Schulz is studying the possibility of refurbishing the old city shop building, using available grant funds. Mike Bogenreif continues to work on the Tekoa Memorial Trail (note addition to goal #7). We are also investigating the possibility of allowing homes in Tekoa that are for sale to be included on our city’s website for a nominal fee. And now to Slippery Gulch!! As you are probably aware, the Tekoa Chamber of Commerce now oversees our annual celebration day. New co-presidents for the Chamber are Joyce Hansen and Sandy Dehan. Kim Schulz would like community members to help her design the 2010 t-shirt. Let her know if you or anyone else has some clever ideas! Melinda Wilkins will again serve as co-chairman of the Slippery Gulch Celebration and will also be in charge of the popular American “Small Town” Idol contest. It appears that the contest will run two days (Friday and Saturday) and possibly have an adult division and one for young adults. Carol Sturman will assist Melinda with this contest. The celebration committee is looking for an organization to run the dunk tank and a person to run a horseshoe tourney. Volunteers are always needed. Simply call Joyce at 208-274-2738, Sandy at 284-2313, Melinda at 284-5810, or call me at 284-2345!! The date for the celebration is June 19, and I will use this newsletter to continually update our patrons of the various activities associated with our celebration.
