~Tekoa Empire Theatre Presents:
The Senders, one of the region’s most popular classic rock and roll bands, will perform in concert onSaturday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m. at the Tekoa Empire Theatre, in Tekoa Washington. Originally formed in 1988, the four-member group quickly became known as one of the best cover bands in the region, specializing in hits from the 1950’s through to the 1970’s. Their large repertoire includes surf music, Doo-Wop, Beatles favorites, romantic ballads, iconic classics and rockabilly-influenced songs. Their specialty lies in their desire to recreate the tunes as close to the originals as possible. Strong vocals and solid four-part harmonies enable them to perform selections that many groups simply cannot attempt. Their song list includes hits by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Van Morrison, Credence Clearwater Revival, Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, Ritchie Valens, The McCoys, The Beach Boys and many more.
The Senders are Hal Logan on drums, Jim Roberts on guitar, Jon Anderson on keyboards and guitar, and Mark Snodgrass on upright and electric bass. The group disbanded in 1997, performed several reunion gigs, and officially re-formed in 2008. Throughout their career they have performed for many community celebrations, dances, festivals, weddings, county fairs, car shows, and private parties, campus events and benefits, but have rarely, if ever, taken the opportunity to display their virtuosity in a concert setting.
All four Senders are involved in music education where they live. Anderson teaches piano at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Logan teaches music at a private college in Portland, Oregon; Roberts gives private guitar lessons in Palouse, and Snodgrass teaches voice, double bass and electric bass in Clarkston. Both Logan and Snodgrass have played music since they were youngsters, as both of their fathers were music teachers. Mark has a music degree, and Hal and Jon both have Master’s degrees in music from U of I. Jim started playing guitar when he was 13 and has played for 48 years. He is proficient in a variety of genres, including rock, country, ragtime, Celtic and folk.
Admission to the concert will be $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, and 12 and under are free. Call for more information: 509-284-3801.
~Messages from the Mayor~
Well, it seems I just wrote the February newsletter, and now it’s already March, and winter is about over. So, what city news is worthy to write about? Not much, but here goes a feeble attempt.
I’ll start with some information concerning our Slippery Gulch Celebration, which is June 18!! Darren Heer is now in charge of the fun run, and it now will be on Friday –late afternoon –and possibly a run through town rather than on the old route. The Mendoza family will arrange the lawn volleyball tourney, requiring less of an entry fee and better prizes for the winners! The Slippery Gulch planning committee is looking at the possibility of a flea market on this day and possibly some type of activity in our Theatre that would involve our 50-year grads and other graduating classes that are celebrating in Tekoa on this day. Is there any interest in a horseshoe tourney? I’ll be using this newsletter to help promote our celebration day, so look for more of the same next month!!
Melinda Wilkins wanted me to put the Tekoa Royalty program on everyone’s calendar. It’s March 20, at 4:00 p.m., at the Tekoa Empire Theatre, and all are welcome to attend and support this program.
A patron informed me that I left Portia Pillig and her Christmas wish tree off my list of thank-yous! It was my oversight.
Also, if any of our patrons know of someone who has moved away, or lives out of town and would like to receive the city newsletter, let the gals at City Hall know, and one will be sent each month.
Our Project Share program is now in operation. A committee is now developing application forms, etc. I know that you have noticed an opportunity to make a donation (any size) along with your monthly utility bill, which will be used to help some of our patrons who are presently in need of some financial support. Council person Eileen Soldwedel, is in charge of the committee that will disseminate funds that have been donated.
I read that the Lone Pine Cemetery has been nominated to the Register for Historic Preservation.
The council is still planning to convert the old city shop, located just north of the feeding station, into a recycling center. When this happens, it would appear that we would have less garbage, thus a smaller garbage can, thus a less monthly garbage fee. That appears to be a win – win for everyone!!
In summary, the council also discussed the need to provide upkeep to vacant lots and vacant homes that require almost weekly care in the summer. Let us know if there is such a lot next to your home!
So goes my feeble attempts; this is actually quite a bit to write about in our town, so I’d better quit complaining.
~Please check out our website, www.tekoawa.com. There is great info about our city!
