~The Tekoa High School Class of 1950 has plans in place for their 60th class reunion. It will be held during Slippery Gulch Days, on Saturday June 19. Organizer Tim Daily of Portland Oregon has directed his fellow graduates to meet for dinner and a program at the Airport Ramada Inn of Spokane on Friday night. The next morning, they will ‘hitch up their buggies’ and head for Tekoa for breakfast and the annual graduates ride down Crosby Street, during the Slippery Gulch parade. Tim’s hopeful they will all join in this fun summer event. For more information, call him @ 503-252-2006. Class of 1950 will see you soon.

WATER CONSERVATION TIP FOR MAY ~ To save water and money, try washing the car on the lawn! You get the grass watered and the car cleaned at the same time. Also, the soap in the water gets rid of some pesky bugs!
~Messages from the Mayor~
Are you ready for some sunshine? That thing about April showers is holding true…. only now with the wind. We can be thankful, however, that we are not encountering floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and the drought!!
I’m not sure what this all has to do with business at City Hall, except I really don’t have a lot to report this month. We applied for an airport grant that would improve the road entering the facility, as well as developing a model of what the airport could look like once the recently acquired acres are incorporated into the airport facility. Airport grants require the city to pay 5% of the total cost of any development. Consequently, it’s hard to pass up opportunities to upgrade the airport.
The city crew (Duane and Rob) are planning to lay some water lines this summer. The plan was initially to contract this type of work, but the costs are totally unreasonable. We are going to do as much as possible each summer, knowing ultimately we will need to contract out that portion of replacing water/sewer lines that require tearing up main streets in town. We will know this month (May) if our grant to upgrade the reservoir and replace well #2 is accepted. These projects will only be a minimum cost to the city.
It’s not that I haven’t enough to do, but I recently read through Tekoa’s Comprehensive Plan that was prepared in 1981, during Don Prince’s administration. (What a lot of work!!) According to this plan, there is a process we are supposed to follow for things like land sub-division, for example. We probably should have been familiar with this document a long time ago. However, there are some very interesting facts in this plan that I bet few people know. For instance, before our town was called Tekoa, what was its name? First one to call City Hall (284-3861) with the right answer will have his/her name in next month’s newsletter!!
Now, on to Slippery Gulch. By the way, does anyone really know how our celebration day got its name? Again, call City Hall! It now appears certain we will have a grass volleyball tournament made up of teams of 2 or 4 individuals. More information will be forthcoming. Angie Rambo reports that the dessert auction, to help finance our fireworks display, is May 15, at the J.C. Club. A Sloppy Joe dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30, and the dessert auction will start at 7:30. There will be a live and silent auction. Lou St. John reports that there will be a roping event at the arena, both on Saturday and Sunday. *The fireworks dessert auction date has been changed to Friday, June 4. The time is still as scheduled.
I will end my newsletter with two reminders: First, be looking for two new signs entering Tekoa. Also, our engineering firm will talk about the future of our waste water plant at the May 3 City Council Meeting. It’s important that Tekoa residents understand the predicament we are in, both with our water and waste water systems.
The float preview will be sometime during the week of May 10. Watch the reader board.
From your Rambling Mayor….
