Mosquito Fogging Notice: We are planning to start fogging for mosquitoes on Wednesdays, beginning May 6, after dusk. If you do not want your property fogged, you must let us know in writing at City Hall by Tuesday, May 5, at 4:00 p.m.

Do you have an underground sprinkler system? The State of Washington will require you to have your backflow preventers professionally tested before turning on your sprinkler systems. The city will need proof of this test before you use your sprinklers.

Meters to be read in May: Meters will be read in May. Be sure to remove the insulation from your meter boxes.

Tekoa Library Happenings for May:

The Whitman County Library buildings currently remain closed, but our website is OPEN. Go to www.whitco.lib.wa.us for downloadable eBooks, electronic services, tutorials, kid-and teen-friendly links, and much more.  For a limited time, the library is offering access to free movies with your library card through Kanopy; details are on our website.  Check the Tekoa Library FB page frequently for updates of online events such as Kids Club Live (the first one was a blast!) and other library announcements related to Summer Reading and more.  If you have questions you can leave a message at the library: 509-284-3121, and Shelly will get back to you. You are missed!

HEALTHY Tekoa News:

I hope this newsletter finds all of you safe and well. As another month has gone by, we are getting a little more tech savvy. There are some great resources for parents on StartTalkingNow.org website. There are free parent webinars from WSU Extension office posted on the Start Talking Now Facebook page. This is the perfect time to increase your bonding time with your children. Give kids at least 15 minutes of one-on-one time every day, do fun things together, give positive feedback about the healthy choices your child makes, and eat as a family five times per week. With schedules in a state of flux, it is important to set clear rules and talk about them often. Always monitor what your kids are doing and help them plan safe and fun activities. You can check out healthytekoa.org for some ideas. The Coalition Meeting on May 12th will be held via Zoom. Please contact Jennifer Olson at jolson@tekoasd.org to be added to the email list.

Messages from the Mayor~

Hello Tekoa!  What a strange time we’re in right now….  Last month, I told you I would stay positive, encouraging, and I’m going to keep going with that message!  Stay Positive, my friends!  We will get through this together!  Ok… enough exclamation points.  (More are coming… just FYI…)

Floyd the Duck is out in the yard eating everything She can find.  Yes, She is a She.  I am positive (YESSS!  Staying POSITIVE!) She is a She because She lays eggs.  Why is her name Floyd?  Because a certain grandchild decided that was her name.  Or maybe it was a daughter… Who cares?!  The duck’s name is Floyd.  I’ll try to remember to post a video of her enjoying the water in our little pond.  It’s absolutely hilarious….

 What’s Positive About Tekoa?!!

Local Business!  I’m all in for supporting our local businesses in Tekoa.  Shop here.  Our businesses have been here for you for years!  It’s time for us to be here for them!  Please spend your money HERE.

Several citizens have painted ‘egg rocks’ and placed them all over the place!  It’s AWESOME!  I love going for a walk and finding these little pieces of sunshine all over Tekoa.  Thank you so much, friends and family, for taking the time to make those and placing them all over our beloved city.

Easter Eggs and Bears in The Windows!  Again… Walk your neighborhood!  Look in the windows!  Find the Easter Eggs!  Find the Bears!  It’s very refreshing to get out and about and see your neighbors. (From a Distance…) The Easter Bunny visited the Wilson house this month.  I know the Easter Bunny visited you too…  What a great time we had waiting and watching for the fire truck to show up with the lights and sirens… And a Giant Easter Bunny!  Sam and the grand kids were so excited to see you….  Thank you for your time! I love this city!

Church Online.  I know this is a weird time… but I know of at least one local church posting their service online every week.  What a great idea!  We can’t attend our local churches right now.  Attend via online!

We have so many trails around us; it is absolutely amazing.  If you need something to do… Just start walking.  There are so many things we can do and see RIGHT HERE IN TEKOA… Just take a walk.  It is amazing!  My grandkids and I are out on the trail every day.  EVERY DAY…  DO IT!

School Lunches.  Oh, My Goodness.  THANK YOU SO MUCH, TEKOA SCHOOL DISTRICT!  Thanks to Superintendent Mark Heid, Principal Dan Hutton, and ALL OF THE TEKOA SCHOOL STAFF!  I am peeking out the window every morning when you show up with lunch and tomorrow’s breakfast for any child!  That is so fantastic!

CRUISE NIGHT!  Holy cow… Every Friday night at 7 p.m., YOU can cruise the streets in Tekoa and see your neighbors!  Wave!  Honk!  It’s absolutely FANTASTIC!  Thank you, Shelly Ausmus, for making this happen…!!  And making it so positive for Tekoa!  I LOVE IT!!!   You can call our local businesses ahead, and pick up curb-side.  What a great idea!!

The Sun is shining.  The Grass is Green.  Close your eyes and breathe in through your nose…. It’s amazing.
