~Messages from the Mayor~
~~~Please remember to vote on our 2010 street levy. I’m not supposed to promote this or any other item on the ballot, but I can encourage people to vote!
~~~I was somewhat surprised with the City’s financial commitment to the Golden Rod Cemetery budget. Eighty percent of the budgeted $17,631 comes from the utility tax. This tax is what you pay monthly with your water/sewer/garbage bill, telephone bill, and Avista bill! Most of the utility tax monies that come to the city go in our current expense account.
~~~Contract with Whitman County Sherriff’s Office Whitman County Sheriff, Brett Meyer, presented the council with a proposed contract for 2010. For their services, we paid $43,856.00 in 2009, and it will remain the same figure for 2010! Just a reminder, two years ago our contract with the Whitman County Sheriff’s Department was $80,000! The current price is more manageable, and it doesn’t appear that the service we receive has diminished to any great extent.
~~~Linda Zehm Resigns her Council Position We have lost a valuable contributor on our city council! The only good news with this resignation is that she will serve until a replacement is appointed. She has agreed to continue to be on the committee that oversees the Golden Rod Cemetery! It needs to be noted that Linda is very active in Tekoa’s Chamber of Commerce and highly involved in the Slippery Gulch Celebration. I’m sure you are aware that Melinda Wilkins didn’t run for election, and Eileen Soldwedel is on the ballot for her council position. Melinda did an excellent job as a councilperson, partially because of her close ties to so many people in the community. Melinda is also very active with the Slippery Gulch Celebration (co-chairman) besides her involvement with the Tekoa Royalty Program. It will be a pleasure having the experience Eileen will bring to the council. I might be getting ahead of myself, but Eileen is running unopposed for the council position!
~~~I want all our constituents to know that our next workshop meeting is scheduled for November 2 at 7:00 p.m., and we’ll focus on both the water and sewer budgets for 2010. Included in this meeting will be a discussion of our current rates paid by home owners. We encourage concerned/interested patrons to attend this very important workshop. ~~~Also note that the final 2010 budget public hearing will be during the regular December council meeting. The hearing will be after 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2009, at the city hall council chambers.
~~~And finally, any interested patron who has an interest in becoming a councilperson to fill Linda Zehm’s position needs to contact City Hall for an application. The council will appoint someone prior to the new year!!
