~Messages from the Mayor~
~CHANGE IN COUNCIL MEETING DATES The council decided to have one meeting per month devoted to taking care of normal monthly business. This meeting will be the third Monday of each month. A second meeting each month will focus on a particular topic/concern. For instance, the October topic will be the cost of maintaining the Goldenrod Cemetery. This “work session” meeting will always be the first meeting of the month. I will note in my newsletter what the topic of this work session will be. I know the council is interested in spending one of these meetings discussing the airport. Other meetings will be scheduled to address our 2010 city budget. If the council believes no work session is necessary, there will only be the one “business” meeting that month.
~GRANT TO REPAIR WATER RESERVOIR We have submitted an application for a grant to “rehabilitate” our reservoir. Basically, we would replace the steel trusses that now support the roof over thereservoir. This would be a major project, because the roof would probably need to be lifted and removed. At the same time, the water in the reservoir would need to be protected from falling debris. The grant request is for $332,000. With this grant, there is no requirement for matching funds from the city.
~GOLF COURSE LEASE AGREEMENT We are currently working with the Golf Course Association to update our current lease agreement. As you know from past newsletters, we have renewed lease agreements with the Jaycee Club, and are completing one with the Theatre Organization. Earlier, we updated the lease agreement with the two businesses located in the Old City Hall.
~WATER CERTIFICATION Both Duane Groom and Rob Brownfield successfully secured their Water Certification. Duane is now certified as a Waste Water and Water Operator. Rob will now focus on getting his Waste Water Certification.

I would like to thank Mary Heitt for submitting a “Thank you” request! Her Thank you is to Dan Hutton for installing pavers at the rest stop. She would also like to thank the city employees for maintaining the restrooms during the summer months. As you know, Mary and her husband Jerry maintain this facility the rest of the year! She also noted that my plea for donations netted about $175.00; this is $100.00 short of the amount required to purchase necessary supplies to maintain the restrooms. Donations are accepted at the American West Bank.
My thank you goes to a real city activist, Jerry Squibb. Jerry recently resigned as our airport manager which is a volunteer position that requires a great deal of time and commitment. I’m hoping that we can find someone to replace him! Giving time and effort to the City of Tekoa, is nothing new to Jerry. He is a former Town Councilman, J.C. Club President, ambulance volunteer, and even served in our police department. Jerry and his wife Donna, still remain active members of our Chamber of Commerce.
